REACH Fireside Chats began spring 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and school closures. The podcast brought educators around the country to some of the most prominent educational experts. Hosted by Dr. Monica George-Fields with chatroom co-host Dr. Karren Dunkley, REACH Fireside Chats became a favorite place for educators to commune, share their thoughts about policies, and share ideas for addressing the inequities and low achievement that are often found in public schools servicing Black and Latino students.

This episode explores Dr. Richard F. Elmore’s research and findings discussed in chapter one of School Reform from the Inside Out: Policy, Practice, and Performance. In this chapter, Dr. Elmore discusses the issues with reform at scale. His research is based on surveys of school leaders and teachers and thousands of school visits. At the heart of the chapter are three concepts Dr. Elmore believes are necessary for any type of effective reform to occur at scale. The concepts are knowledge, skill, and capacity.
